Direction in Japanese / Harajyuku Wa Doko Desu Ka / はらじゅくはどこですか

Basic Japanese

Hi, this is Yuyujin.

I went to Yoyogi park (Yoyogi Kouen (よよぎこうえん)) on Sunday.
Yoyogi Kouen is located in Tokyo.
Tokyo is getting warm recently.
Some kind of cherry blossoms are blooming.

There were a lot of foreign travelers.
2 Hong Kong women asked me the direction of street stalls near Harajyuku.
The street stalls are located at the opposite side of Yoyogi Kouen.
So I said “Kochira Desu(こちらです。)”, this direction in Japanese.

Today I would like to introduce the phrase to ask the direction in Japanese.
Let’s get started.

Sakura at Yoyogi Kouen

Here A is a place where you want to know the direction.Today’s phrase is
A Wa Doko Desu Ka(Aはどこですか。)

A Wa Doko Desu Ka(Aはどこですか。) means “Where is A?”.

Let’s make some examples.

Harajyuku Wa Doko Desu Ka
(はらじゅくはどこですか。)
Where is Harajyuku?

Harajyuku Wa Achira Desu
(はらじゅくはあちらです。)
Harajyuku is over there.

When you have a tour guide book, you point the page where you want to go and say …

Koko Wa Doko Desu Ka
(ここはどこですか。)
Where is this?

Kochira Desu
(こちらです。)
This direction.

When you want to know the distance to the place…

Koko Wa Tooii Desu Ka
(ここはとおいいですか。)
Is this far from here?

Soko Wa Chikai Desu
(そこはちかいです。)
There is close.

Tooi(とおい): far
Chikai(ちかい): close, near

Soko Wa Aruite Ikemasu
(そこはあるいていけます。)
There is within the walking distance.

Soko Wa Aruite Dorekurai Desu Ka
(そこはあるいてどれくらいですか。)
How long does it take to walk there?

Aruite 5 hun Desu
(あるいて5ふんです。)
It is a 5 minutes on walk.

OK,that’s it.
Thank you so much.
Have a good trip!
