“Like” in Japanese / Watashi Wa Sushi Ga Suki Desu /

Basic Japanese

Hi, this is Yuyujin.

How about your Japanese studies?

Today we learn ” like” and “dislike” in Japanese.
Let’s get started.

The basic pattern “like” and “dislike” is as following.
A Wa B Ga Suki Desu(AB
A Wa B Ga Kirai Desu(AB

A Wa B Ga Suki Desu (AB

This sentence means “A likes B.”

Kanojyo Wa Akairo Ga Suki Desu
She likes red color.

Kare Wa Amai Mono Ga Suki Desu
He likes sweet things.

Watashi Wa Sushi Ga Suki Desu
I like Sushi.

Anata Wa Sushi Ga Suki Desu Ka
Do you like Sushi?

“Ka(か)”  is added to make a question form.
OK, what is your answer?

Hai Watashi Wa Sushi Ga Suki Desu
Yes, I like Sushi.

Iie Watashi Wa Sushi Ga Kirai Desu
No, I dislike Sushi.

But it is too strong.
Usually we will say,

Iie Watashi Wa Sushi Ga Suki Dehaarimasen
No, I don’t like Sushi.

Or

Iie Watashi Wa Namano Sakana Ga Nigate Desu
No, I don’t like a raw fish.

“Nigate(にがて)” means a soft form of “dislike”.

A Wa B Ga Kirai Desu(AB

This sentence means “A dislikes B.”

Wtashi Wa Samui Tokoro Ga Kirai Desu
I dislike cold regions.

Kare Wa Takai Tokoro Ga Kirai Desu

Watashi Wa Natto Ga Kirai Desu
I dislike Natto.

Do you know Natto(なっとう)?
Natto is fermented soybeans.
It smell bad, but it is a healthy food.
It is not the case that all Japanese people like Natto.

I eat it with rice almost everyday.

Watashi Wa Notto Ga Suki Desu

OK, that’s it.
Thank you so much.
Have a good trip!
