6. Number in Japanese にほんごのかず

Japanese has a different number system.
English number system is in units of three.
It jumps up 3 digit each, like thousand, million, billion and trillion.
Japanese number system is in units of four.
It jumps up 4 digit each.

 

1. Small number in Japanese にほんごのちいさなかず

Let’s study numbers from 1 to 99.
4,7 and 9 have  plural pronunciations.
You should memorize from one to ten at first.

Basic rule is same as English.

17 is “じゅう なな/Jyu Nana”.
It means “10( じゅう/Jyu) and 7(なな/Nana)”.

24 is “に じゅう よん/ Ni Jyu Yon”.
It means “2(に/Ni) times 10(じゅう/Jyu) and 4(よん/Yon)”.

2. Big number in Japanese にほんごのおおきなかず

Big number in Japanese is easy after you understand Japanese small numbers.
The rule is same as the number till 99.

1053 is “せんごじゅうさん/Sen Go Jyu San”.
It means “1000(せん/Sen) and 5(ご/Go) times 10(じゅう/Jyu) and 3(さん/San)”.

30,503 is “さんまんごひゃくさん/San Man Go Hyaku San”.
It means “3(さん/San) times 10,000(まん/Man) and 5(ご/Go) times 100(ひゃく/Hyaku) and 3(さん/San)”.
