Where would you like to go when you visit Japan?
Tokyo? Kyoto? Mt.Fuji?
Recently a lot of foreigners visit various places in Japan.
Japanese transportation is convenient.
There are many Roman character’s, Chinese and Korean signs at stations and in cities.
Foreigners don’t worry to visit popular places in Japan.
But when you visit a very local place or a very domestic restaurant, it is convenient to know how to ask about locations in Japanese.
I will introduce you some basic phrases.
Let’s get started.
When you ask about the location in a foreign country, you will ask ” Where is this?” with pointing map or a tour guide book.
The Japanese phrase is ” Koko Wa Doko Desu Ka(ここはどこですか。)”.
Koko Wa Doko Desu Ka
(ここはどこですか。)
Where is this?
“Koko Wa Doko Desu Ka (ここはどこですか。)” can be used to ask “Where I am?” and “Where is here?”
“Koko(ここ)” is one of Kosoado Kotoba that is pointing the near place.

I will make some examples.
Example 1
Watashi Wa Fujisan Ni Ikimasu
(わたしはふじさんにいきます。)
I will go to Mt. Fuji.
Fujisan Wa Doko Desu Ka
(ふじさんはどこですか。)
Where is Mt. Fuji?
Example2
Watashi Wa Kono Resutoran Ni Ikimasu
(わたしはこのレストランにいきます。)
I will go this restaurant.
Kono Resutoran Wa Doko Desu Ka
(このレストランはどこですか。)
Where is this restaurant?
Here “Watashi Wa (place name) Ni Ikimasu” is a new phrase.
“Watashi Wa” means “I”.
” (place name)+ Ni” means ” to + (place name) “.
“Ikimasu” means “go”.
“Ni(に)” in “(place name) + Ni” is a postpositional particle.
Japanese has postpositional particles that does not exist in English and Chinese.
I will explain sometime.
Anyway I would like you to remember the pattern “Watashi Wa (place name) Ni Ikimasu” .
I will make some examples using this phrase.
Watashi Wa Tokyo Ni Ikimasu
(わたしはとうきょうにいきます。)
I will go to Tokyo.
Watashi Wa Onsen Ni Ikimasu
(わたしはおんせんにいきます。)
I will go to a hot spring.
Watashi Wa America Ni Ikimasu
(わたしはアメリカにいきます。)
I will go to the US.
OK.
What is the question form of “Watashi Wa (place name) Ni Ikimasu” ?
It is very easy.
You remember Japanese “Ka(か)” at the end of the sentence means question mark “?”.
So you only add this “Ka(か)” at the end of the sentence.
Anata Wa Tokyo Ni Ikimasu Ka
(あなたはとうきょうにいきますか。)
Will you go to Tokyo?
Anata Wa Onsen Ni Ikimasu Ka
(あなたはおんせんにいきますか。)
Will you go to a hot spring?
Anata Wa America Ni Ikimasu Ka
(あなたはアメリカにいきますか。)
Will you go to the US?
OK.
Next let’s make a question “where does (something) go to?”.
Anata Wa Doko Ni Ikimasu Ka
(あなたはどこにいきますか。)
Where do you go to?
Doko is also one of Kosoado Kotoba that expresses “where”.
When you worry about the destination of the bus or train.
This is an emergency situation for Travelers.
Kono Basu Wa Doko Ni Ikimasu Ka
(このバスはどこにいきますか。)
Where does this bus go to?
Kono Densha Wa Doko Ni Ikimasu Ka
(このでんしゃはどこにいきますか。)
Where does this train go to?
