Japanese for Travelers / Train system in Japan

Hi, this is Yuyujin.

The train system in Tokyo is convenient.
But it might be complicated for foreign travelers.
There are a lot of information in a station.
Today I would like to explain that information.

There are a few name plates at each platform.
The picture is the station name plate.
Here you can find a lot of information.
You can see the station name, the next station name and the previous station name.
It is written in Hiragana, Kanji character, Alphabet, Chinese and Korean.

The example photo says (see the below photo)
This station is Shinagawa station, しながわ.
The previous station is Tamachi station, たまち.
The next station is Oosaki station, おおさき.

And there are a line’s symbol and a station number.
They are only for foreign persons.
Most Japanese does not know the line’s symbol and a station number.
The symbol and the number are announced in a train only in English.

There are also a few destination plate at a platform.
The below photo is the destination plate.
You can see the platform number, the line’s name and the destination.
The example photo says,
This platform is No.1.
And this line is Yamanote Line, やまのてせん.
And the destination is Tokyo , Ueno and Komagome, とうきょう,うえの,こまごめ.
