“Can” in Japanese / Watashi Wa Eigo Ga Dekimasu / わたしはえいごができます。

Hi, this is Yuyujin.

Today it was a warm and rainy day in Tokyo.
Spring comes day by day.

Can you do “forward upward circling” ?
I could do it.
I did a lot of  exercise at my elementary school.

This time I introduce “Can” and “Can not” expression in Japanese.
Let’s get started.

 

Forward Upward Circling (Sakaagari(さかあがり))


A
 Wa B Ga Dekimasu(ABができます。)
Basic patterns of “Can” and ” Can not” in Japanese are as follows.
A Wa B Ga Dekimasu(ABができます。)
A Wa B Ga Dekimasen(ABができません。)

 

Watashi Wa Sakaagari Ga Dekimasu
(わたしはさかあがりができます。)
I can do forward upward circling.

Here B is a noun.

Kare Wa Eigo Ga Dekimasu
(かれはえいごができます。)
He can speak English.

You can replace any languages instead of “Eigo(えいご)”.
For example,
Chugokugo(ちゅうごくご ): Chinese
Doitsugo(ドイツご): German
Kankokugo(かんこくご): Korean
Furansugo(フランスご): French
Ukurainago(ウクライナご): Ukrainian
Porandogo(ポーランドご): Polish

Kanojyo Wa Ryouri Ga Dekimasu
(かのじょはりょうりができます。)
She can cook.

A Wa B Ga Dekimasen(ABができません。)

 

Anata Wa Chuugokugo Ga Dekimasen
(あなたはちゅうごくごができません。)
You can not speak Chinese.

Watashi Wa Suiei Ga Dekimasen
(わたしはすいえいができません。)
I can not swim.

Question and answer forms are as below.

Kanojyo Wa Suki Ga Dekimasu Ka
(かのじょはスキーができますか。)
Can she ski?

Hai Dekimasu
(はい。できます。)
Yes, she can.

Iie Dekimasen
(いいえ。できません。)
No, she can’t.
