Meiji Shrine at Tokyo/Meiji Jingu/明治神宮

Yoyogi Park and Meiji Jingu Shrine are right next to Harajuku and Shibuya’s youth towns.
Thanks to the tall trees that surround Meiji Jingu, you can enjoy the sacred atmosphere and spend a quiet time.
This magnificent Meiji Jingu Forest is an artificial forest designed in 1915 and designed to be a sacred forest after 100 years.

Approach/Sando/参道

Harajuku Gate is a main entrance.
A long approach continues from Harajuku Gate.
A lot of people from overseas visit.

It is very quiet atmosphere because it is surrounded by Yoyogi forest after entering from Harajuku Gate.

Sake and wine barrels are displayed on both sides of the approach.
It is barrels of sake offered from all over Japan and barrels of wine dedicated from the Burgundy region of France.

Garden/Gyoen/御苑

On the right side of the approach is the entrance to a special garden.
There is a fountain in the garden. Iris is planted in the field which used the fountain as a water source, and beautiful flowers bloom in June.

Gate/Torii/鳥居

Meiji Jingu has three gates, Harajuku Gate, Yoyogi Gate and Sangubashi Gate.
At each gate, a torii is set up to separate the world from the sacred sanctuary.
Especially from Harajuku Gate, you will pass through three torii before you enter the shrine.

Shrine/Goshaden/御社殿

The shrine has an entrance from 3 directions.
The honorable shrine is a masterpiece.
On an auspicious day, you may see wedding brides, bridesmaids and children’s celebrations.

Sangubashi Gate/参宮橋口

Let’s go in the direction of Sangubashi Gate after having a visit at the shrine.
You can enjoy the quiet atmosphere different from the approach from Harajuku Gate.

Access

There are three gates to Meiji Shrine: Harajuku Gate, Yoyogi Gate, and Sangubashi Gate.

Harajuku Gate

Harajuku Gate is a 1-2 minute walk from Harajuku Station on JR Yamanote Line and Meijijingu Mae Station on Chiyoda Line and Fukutoshin Line of Tokyo Metro Subway.
Harajuku Gate is a large main gate with many visitors.
When you visit by car, you can enter from Harajuku Gate or Yoyogi Gate.
Harajyuku Gate is close to Gyoen garden which is a special garden and Forest Terrace where you can enjoy meal.

Yoyogi Gate

Yoyogi Gate is close to Yoyogi Station on JR Yamanote Line, Yoyogi Station on Oedo Line of Tokyo Metro. Subway and Kitasando Station on Fukutoshin Line of Tokyo Metro. Subway.
It is the nearest entrance from Goshaden (the main building) and Houmotsuden (the treasure house).
When entering by car, it is possible to enter from Harajuku Gate and Yoyogi Gate.

Sangubashi Gate

Sangubashi Gate is about 5 minutes walk from the Sangubashi station on the Odakyu line.
This gate is convenient to go to Shinjuku from Meiji Jingu Shrine.
